Girl’s Varsity Volleyball: Fall Recap

Amelia Gayle '23, Writer

The Dwight Girls Varsity Volleyball Team had a very strong season, finishing it off as ISAL champions for the first time in 11 years, and playing in the ACIS semi-finals! The team consisted of Grace Guthart ‘22, Lisa Canevari ‘23, Olivia Wamble ‘23, Amelia Gayle ‘23, Mica Quelle ‘23, Nina Hissnauer ‘23, Layla Purovic ‘23 Vanessa Greenwald ‘24, and Lina Thompson ‘25 was small but mighty. Despite not having many girls, the commitment shown across the board made it all work out. The team attended practices and had games Monday through Friday every week starting at the end of August and all while the girls managed their schoolwork, clubs, and social lives while still pursuing their passion for volleyball. They won the ISAL championship 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 26-24). During the ACIS semifinals, they fought hard, having to play all 5 sets, losing the 5th set by a slim 5 points. Coach Tiam, who has been with Dwight for 6 years, put a lot of time and effort into setting the girls up for success. Coach Kendra did a wonderful job in teaching the girls more about blocking, hitting, and being aggressive on the court. Coach Mello, worked very hard in challenging the girls and forcing them to fine-tune their skills, as well as reminding the girls that volleyball is a mental sport, and taught the team that they will only be champions if they practice empathy and teamwork. The Dwight School is very proud of these 9 talented girls for bringing Dwight to States for the first time in 11 years! We can’t wait to see what next year has in store for the girls!
